Crediton Area History And Museum Society was founded in September 1984 by a group of enthusiastic local historians led by Rev. Christopher Gilham who aimed to promote interest in local history and to provide Crediton with a museum. The society became a registered charity in 1991.
Crediton Museum and Heritage Centre opened in April 2010 in the ground floor room of the Old Town Hall in Crediton High Street. It is run entirely by volunteers with funds from grants, donations and fundraising events.
Over the last 25 years the Society has put on a number of successful exhibitions focusing on Crediton and its people at different periods of history. In addition, monthly lectures are held, usually at the Boniface Centre in Crediton, and visits to places of historic importance and occasional social events are organised.
The Society sends representatives to other committees such as those refurbishing the Town Hall, reinstating Upper Deck at George Hill, and Crediton Festivals.
