In response to increased interest we are extending the hours when the Research Corner at the museum is open
With effect from Wednesday 15th May, people will be able to visit the museum to research their family history from 10am till 4pm every Wednesday, as well as on Saturday mornings from 10am till 1pm.
The museum is a Service Point for Devon Heritage Centre so has micro fiche copies of all the parish registers for 23 parishes in and around Crediton, extending back to the 1500s. We also have access to the census returns from 1841 to 1911, together with other records on the ‘Find My Past’ web site.
“Many people need help finding their way around the web to make best use of all that is now available there. Those who have used the service so far have been amazed at how comparatively quickly it is possible to learn a great deal more about our ancestors and the lives they led.”
The cost of using this new service in Crediton can be as little as £2 for a session. Access is also gained to the Society’s archive, kept at Downes House, where there are thousands of documents from the Crediton area, from wills and marriage settlements to property sales brochures. There is also a huge collection of local photographs to examine.
