You may have heard that a U3A is shortly going to be established in Crediton. U3As are self-help, self-managed co-operatives for people who have stopped full-time work or family-raising, providing opportunities for their members to share learning experiences in a wide rangeof interest groups and to pursue learning not for qualifications, but simply for enjoyment.
There are U3A's in almost every town of any size in the UK and many more in the rest of the world. The organizational body for U3A's is the Third Age Trust (www.u3a.org.uk/the-third-age-trust.html ) and a look at their website will give you an idea of the range of activities pursued by members. We anticipate that in the region of 150 - 200 people will be interested in U3A involvement in the Crediton catchment area.
Our inaugural meeting will be from 10am ‘til 12pm in the Boniface Centre on Friday 9th October and you are all invited!
Our U3A will hold monthly meetings addressed by speakers on a wide range of subjects and we will have a number of interest groups that will probably meet, for the most part, in people's homes. These will study a wide variety of subjects (Tiverton has over 50 interest groups & Exe Valley around 30). Among the groups we envisage are archaeology, local history, visits to churches & other ancient buildings, walking & rambling groups, family research, philosophy, current affairs, digital photography, bus pass journeys, computer skills, modern languages and many more.
