The Widecombe History Group has released a series of short talks, entitled ‘Poor on the Moor’, on aspects of poor relief and other support in Widecombe. They are based on parish documents and use examples taken from the book ‘Welfare in Widecombe 1700-1900’ and the associated digitisation project. These talks can be accessed from https://www.widecombe-in-the-moor.com/pooronthemoor/. They can either be watched in sequence, using the playlist, or an individual talk can be selected from the list provided.
It would be interesting to understand how Crediton's provision for the poor compared with the situation in Widecombe.
