18th Century Newton St Cyres

Talk on 18th Century Newton St Cyres by Brian Please. A Newton St Cyres History Group event

When: to March  2018
Where:The Village Hall, Newton St Cyres, EX5 5BL
Who:Brian Please

Dick the Plowman’s map together with plans of the mines are familiar to many in the village. They are from a survey of the village done for a John Quicke soon after he reached his majority. Brian has managed to put Dick’s map onto a more realistic scale and revealed more information.

There was a similar survey done around 10 years later for the Northcote heir. These together with the lengthy documents produced during the sale of land from Northcote to Quicke should form a basis for our Knowledge of the period.

However there are many more documents that have survived for Newton St Cyres. Before the 19th century, the sources of information are varied, different, and sometimes very difficult to read! We will share what progress we have made in an endeavour to give some insight into the lives of ordinary folk and the poor alongside those of the Squire and other landowners.

Meetings are on Wednesday evenings in the Club room of the Village Hall at 7.30pm. A charge of £2 is made to include tea and biscuits. There are no special conditions of membership. All are welcome.
