Exeter Dissenters Graveyard Trust is holding 2 linked events at St Nicholas Priory:
The first is an exhibition on Dissent running from 2-5pm as part of Heritage Open Days. This will feature artefacts from Exeter Dissenters Graveyard set in the context of the history of Dissent in England, historically important Dissenters and the role of Exeter's Ministers. This is free as part of Heritage Open Days and there's no need to book.
The second event, run jointly with Exeter Historic Buildings Trust from 6 to 9pm at the Priory, is set at the time of the last wealthy merchant owner of the Priory. Nathaniel Elias Cosserat (d.1796) and his household will welcome you to a reception.
This evening of entertainment (with a serious core – Dissenters and Education) will start with tasters and drink of the period, during which there will be singing and in-character readings/snippets of local dissenters ending with a letter about Exeter Academy. Then at 7pm we are delighted to welcome Professor Norman Vance, a distinguished academic who is researching Dissenting Academies and will give a talk:
'Right but Repulsive? Dissidence and Learning in English Dissent'.
Tickets can be booked online at https://bit.ly/3Q3RXj3, on www.edgt.org.uk or at the Priory on Sunday afternoons and Mondays.
