Two events this year will add a great deal to what we know about Crediton over nearly two centuries stretching from 1549 to 1743.
The first event is the publication of the third volume of Devon Parish Taxpayers, just (January 2023) released by Devon & Cornwall Record Society. This book, edited by Todd Gray, includes a substantial section on Crediton. In his talk, Todd will look at Crediton in the 1500s and early 1600s. Tony Gale, whose essay on Tudor Crediton forms part of the book, will go on to talk about some of the local people and places we learn about in its pages.
The second event is the forthcoming exhibition on Crediton and the Great Fire of 1743 at our local museum. This exhibition, accompanied by a book due to be published in April, will reveal new insights about life in Crediton before, during and after the Great Fire. Tony Gale’s talk will give us a glimpse of some of the many stories that have come to light in our recent research, as a preview of the exhibition and the accompanying book.
