Discover life in 16th century Exeter, a story of a successful merchant family, who were members of the Company of Merchant Adventurers and the early cloth Guilds, who through courage and adversity became Exeter’s leading citizens and mayors of the city. The lives and times of brothers, William and Thomas and their cousin John Chappell have been brought to life using the rich records and archives of the city. Their family life is also described, the houses where they lived, where they paid their taxes and the valuable inheritance they left to their children.

Stories of the next generation and connections to other merchant families; one grandson of Thomas, Henry Bagwell** who left England in 1609, on the Sea Venture, with the fleet taking urgent supplies to Jamestown, survived a shipwreck and became a successful civic personality in early Virginia.
