Renowned mill historian Martin Watts talks about Devon's tucking (fulling) mills. A Newton St Cyres History Group event.
Newton St Cyres has had many mills throughout the ages, mostly powered by the River Creedy, although not necessarily very close to that river as some leats were quite long. We have a description of a mill in the 1407/8 Plympton Priory Rental. Traces of these very early mills have long gone as they were wooden structures with their water channels lined with board.
The History Group has no special membership. Everyone is welcome to any meeting. Meetings are usually the second Wednesday of the month at the village hall, 7.30pm, £2 with coffee, tea and biscuits.
