Some History of Langford Farmhouse and Barn

A Newton St Cyres History Group event

When: to April  2025
Where:Newton St Cyres Parish Hall, W Town Rd, Newton St Cyres, EX5 5BW
Who:Nils White

Nils is a Heritage Conservation Consultant who advises owners of listed property on how they may make changes in the best way to conserve the heritage of their property. To be able to do this it is beneficial to know and understand the history of the property and how it has been used through the Centuries. Nils previously told our Group about his work on Bakers at the very end of West Town. There was an unusually large fireplace in a barn there which proved a bit of a puzzle. In early Victorian times a butcher held the premises so perhaps it is where he smoked the hams.

If planning permission is to be sought this heritage information is required by the planners.

Langford Farmhouse is Grade 2 listed and is described as a well-preserved example of a traditional lowland-farmhouse in Devon, perhaps surviving from the early 16th Century. It originally had a three-room and cross-passage plan and has since had many additions, including a variety of fireplaces. One fireplace has the remains of a smoking chamber at one side and a bread oven at the other side.

Those who live in old houses (there are many in the parish) may wish to compare and those that live in modern houses may come and see how interesting and different the old ones can be.

Admission £3 including drinks and biscuits. All welcome.
