Devon Smugglers

A Bow & District Historical Society event

When: to March  2025
Where:Bow Village Hall, Station Rd, Bow, Crediton EX17 6HU
Who:Robert Hesketh

As Robert describes, with such a lot of coastline in Devon and  so many boats and ships, many people saw smuggling as an opportunity to profit and to avoid paying taxes. Everyone was at it; poor people right through to clergymen, magistrates and aristocrats, and the trading wasn't as romantic as television and the film industry sometimes suggests.

£4 entry for visitors, or BDHS annual membership is excellent value at £15. Free entry for under-18s. Tea/coffee biscuits free for everyone. Enquiries 01363 82468
