Transcriptions of memorial inscriptions from Crediton Old Congregational cemetery
Although records are not 100% clear, the chapel originated in Broad Street in 1801, behind 108 High Street, and appears to have joined the Congregational Union possibly in the 1830s. It outgrew that building (since demolished) and the new building (i.e. the present Congregational Church 50 metres to the West) was finished around 1865.
The graveyard on the old site is still in existence as the garden of a private house. It can be accessed by going up the alleyway next to the shoe repairers in High Street, not that far from the current church. We don't know when the last burial was, but the last stone recorded is 1911. We know that Alex Borne (a congregationalist) who died in UK in 1919 as a result of WW1 is buried at Holy Cross.
We suspect that the names "Chapel" and "Church" were used interchangeably.
