THIS TABLET IS ERECTED TO THE GLORY OF GOD
& AS A RECORD OF THE SERVICE HELD ON WEDNESDAY
JUNE 9TH 1909 IN THIS CHURCH OF THE HOLY CROSS ON
THE OCCASION OF THE MILLENARY OF THE CONSECRATION
OF THE FIRST BISHOP OF CREDITON

THE COMMEMORATION WAS FIXED FOR JUNE 9TH AS BEING THE NEAREST CONVENIENT DATE TO JUNE 5TH
THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE MARTYRDOM OF WINNIFRITH
(ST BONIFACE) WHO WAS BORN AT CREDITON IN THE YEAR
680 AND THROUGH WHOSE INFLUENCE A GRANT OF LAND
WAS MADE BY AETHELHEARD KING OF WESSEX THROUGH
FORTHERE BISHOP OF SHERBORNE TO FOUND A MONASTERY
AT CREDITON IN 739
